Notes On Faith…

Now while [Zechariah] was serving as priest before God … he [entered] the temple of the Lord … And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord … the angel said, “Do not be afraid for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son…And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great before the Lord…he will be filled with the Holy Spirit. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to God”
And Zechariah said, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.”
(Luke 1:8-20 ESV)

A few quick observations on faith this morning.  This is the account of the John the Baptist’s birth being foretold by the angel Gabriel.  And I wanted to note a few observations on the nature of faith taken from Zechariah (John the Baptist’s father) and his interaction with Gabriel (the angel giving the news to Zechariah).

Comparison…

“For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.  For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek.  They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind.”
(Psalm 73:3-5)

I came across Psalm 73 this morning and was reminded of the pitfall of comparison that I often fall into.  Prior to the recent battle that has entered my life I felt entitled to many things.  And I’m finding as I emerge on the other side of the dark forest that my entitlement is often bred in the deceptive trap of comparison.  In a material world of possessions and people, it is difficult to keep my eyes on the ultimate and the immaterial (2 Cor 4:18; Heb 11:1).  It creeps in so subtly as I peruse Facebook and catch a glimpse of someone else’s ‘glorious’ life. Aunt Meg’s Alluringly-Delish-Fluffy-Fruit-Jello-Dish

So Good Friday and Easter Sunday have passed.  Maybe you were lucky enough to score Monday off and had a 3 day weekend.  Your week begins and aside from the guilt of over indulging in Aunt Meg’s strange but alluringly-delish-fluffy-fruit-jello-dish your life returns to normal.  You job overwhelms you and you begin to feel the mundane threaten your sanity and drain your joy.  It doesn’t have to be like this…and it’s not supposed to be like this.

Self-Pity: A way that seems right…

I want to write on some passages that have been the power of God for me in the midst of trial in the past weeks.  As I’ve walked through this many battles with my flesh have risen.  Contrary to what I had assumed, trial actually increases my desire to give into my flesh.  In His wisdom, this is part of God’s design for suffering: like a furnace it burns and reveals impurities in  the temptations that come in its midst (James 1:2-4; 1 Peter 4:12-13) and he has armed us to endure it (2 Peter 4:1-2; 1 Cor 10:13-14).
